Everything close by: Campus life made easy

The University of Rostock is closely interwoven with the city – with campuses, canteens and cafés spread across several districts, student life blends naturally with city life. With a population of around 210,000, Rostock offers the best of both worlds: all the essentials of city life, but with a coastal, relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to feel at home.

At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technologies, most of our facilities are located in the Südstadt district – just ten minutes from Rostock’s historic centre. Everything is within walking distance: lecture halls and seminar rooms, well-equipped research laboratories, a modern library with quiet study rooms, and an award-winning canteen for affordable meals and relaxing breaks.

Living and housingin Rostock

From accommodation to financial support and job opportunities, the University of Rostock offers a well-rounded student experience both on and off campus. Compared to other cities in Germany and Europe, living in Rostock is relatively affordable, making it an attractive choice for students.

There are no tuition fees at the University of Rostock. Instead, you pay a semester contribution of around €300, which includes a “Deutschland Ticket”, which covers public transport and regional trains all across Germany. The semester contribution also grants access to many student services and cultural activities.

Rostock offers a low cost of living compared to other German or European cities – a big plus for students. In total, you should plan for around €1,000 per month to cover all living expenses, including rent, food, health insurance, transport, clothing, leisure, and the semester contribution.

Various scholarships are available, both for international students and specific academic programs, though they may not cover all expenses. Depending on your background and residency status, you might also be eligible for BAföG, Germany’s student financial aid. In addition, part-time job offers are regularly posted on the university’s website.

For housing, you can choose between student dormitories managed by the Studierendenwerk or shared flats (WGs). Many accommodations are located in green residential areas with good public transport connections. The university’s accommodation office can support you in finding a place to stay.
