General Entry Requirements

These are the general academic and language requirements for admission to the programme. They apply to all applicants. Below you’ll find specific information on how to apply, depending on whether your previous education was completed in Germany or elsewhere.

Bachelor’s degree
A bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent degree (including the German “Vordiplom”) with at least 180 credit points (ECTS*); Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications are not sufficient.

CGPA / GATE score
A minimum of 65% CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average; equivalent to a grade of 3.0 in the German grading system) or a comparable grade – alternatively, a GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score of at least 500 – is required.

Proof of subject-specific knowledge

  • Mathematics: at least 15 ECTS
  • Technical Mechanics: at least 10 ECTS
  • Fluid Mechanics / Hydrodynamics: at least 5 ECTS

Further detailed information can be found in the course handbook:

Note: If you are missing up to 12 ECTS (equivalent to two modules with 6 credit points each), you may catch up on them during the first year of your study. However, these courses may be taught in German.

English language proficiency
B2 level (Common European Framework)

Accepted certificates include:

  • IELTS – min. 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT (including “Home Edition”) – min. 90, at least 20 in each section; TOEFL “MyBest Score” is not accepted.
  • Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) / CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) – min. 176 overall
  • PTE Academic – min. 62 overall, at least 59 per section
  • Trinity ISE II – distinction in all sections

Note: The language certificate must not be older than two years at the time of application. Some embassies (e.g. in India) may require certificates issued within the last year. Please check with your local embassy for up-to-date requirements.

Exceptions and special cases

  • The acquisition of a German general higher education entrance qualification (“Abitur” or “Allgemeine Hochschulreife”) is recognised as proof of sufficient English language skills.
  • If your bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English, you don’t need an additional language certificate.
  • Native English speakers are exempt from this requirement.
